Freedom

For the ancient Greeks and ancient Romans freedom was not granted for everybody, but a privilege for the educated and upper classes. Only the Stoics developed an understanding of freedom, but that was based on philosophy and individuals - not politics. Freedom meant individual freedom from the constraints of the world. Nonetheless, the development of the democracy in classical Athens represents a major cultural break and a milestone to freedom.
