An asteroid, discovered on February 7, 1998, was named after Arthur Dent, the protagonist of Douglas Adams' novel "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". The naming of the asteroid "18610 Arthurdent" was announced May 9, 2001. Two days later Adams died of a heart attack.
